Our TECHNOLOGY

NOVEL TECHNOLOGY: SURFACE STRIATIONS: Our patented fibers have micrometer-scale surface striations to optimize the fiber-matrix bond, dramatically increasing fiber effectiveness. You can see the light glinting off the optimized striations if you look closely at the figure.

With our advanced fibers, you can:

  • Achieve enhanced UHPC properties at traditional fiber dosage, OR
  • Reduce fiber dosage to save on UHPC cost, OR
  • Reduce the needed fiber aspect ratio to minimize mixing problems. Our fibers will mimic the beneficial response of much longer fibers.

Our FIBERS

There are two reasons why selection of an appropriate fiber is important:

  • Economy: Fibers are the most expensive part of UHPC. Depending on their dosage, they account for up to 75% of the raw material cost.
  • Performance: The performance of UHPC depends greatly on the characteristics of the fibers.

We’ve designed our fibers with the above in mind. Here are the properties for our striated steel fibers (trade named Type X HiPer fiber).

HiPer STEEL FIBERS HAVE BEEN USED IN 40 US STATES AND CANADA

HiPer steel fibers have been used in 40 US States and in Canada. Usage has mostly been in bridge construction, but it has also been used in architectural applications, coastal structures and wastewater treatment plants. Following are some notable uses. They are notable because they represent important firsts in the use of UHPC technology in the United States.

Bricker Road bridge over the Quackenbush Drain: A Small Bridge with Big Implications

Bricker Road bridge over the Quackenbush Drain, St. Clair County, Michigan, USA

Figure Above: Our signature Type X steel fibers have been used in the Bricker Road bridge over the Quackenbush Drain in St. Clair County, Michigan, USA. Built in 2022, it is the first bridge in the US to have a 100% UHPC superstructure. The bridge utilized our open UHPC recipe and was mixed in a ready mix truck by a crew with little to no experience with UHPC mixing. For its innovative design, the bridge received the “First Place Award Winner in the Small Bridge Category” in Third International Interactive Symposium on Ultra High Performance Concrete (3IISUHPC).

The bridge was dubbed “A Small Bridge with Big Implications”. The bridge’s initial cost was 30% cheaper than a traditional bridge. The savings were due to its extreme lightweight (⅔ less than a traditional concrete bridge), which led to savings in transportation, foundation and construction. Since it is made of UHPC, it is expected that the bridge will have a more than 150 year life with minimal maintenance, leading to terrific long term cost savings in addition to the demonstrated short term savings.

First Bridge in the US with 100% UHPC deck Composite with steel Tub Girders

The Mostetler Road over Mostetler Creek Bridge is the first bridge in the US with a 100% UHPC deck that is composite with steel tub girders. The bridge utilized our open UHPC recipe reinforced with Type X HiPer steel fibers. Figure courtesy of Guy Nelson.

FIBER LENGTH

We are the factory! We can tailor the length of our fibers to your specifications. Most of our customers select fiber lengths of 10mm, 13 mm, 16 mm or 20 mm (with 13 mm being the most common length). Please contact us for details and pricing. Keep in mind  that the striations mimic the performance of longer fibers.

SILVER OR GOLD?

Our fibers come in two primary types:

  • High strength, high carbon steel (brass coated and hence gold colored)
  • Stainless steel (silver colored).

Both fiber categories come with our patent-pending surface modification technology to ensure optimal bond with the UHPC matrix.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

ASTM A820 SPECIFICATIONS

Our fibers meet ASTM A820 Specifications. They are manufactured to the highest standards in our factory, which is located in the heart of Michigan’s manufacturing hub. Our manufacturing activities are done using machines that we designed and built in the United States.

BUY AMERICA ACT GUARANTEE

All of our fibers are 100% compliant with the Buy America Act (BAA) and we provide comprehensive documentation to guarantee this.

FIBER PACKAGING

Our fibers are packaged in 50 lb bags. The bags are loaded onto a pallet, which hold up to 50 bags. Hence each pallet can hold up to 2500 lb.

For large orders, we can custom load our bags. For example, we can provide bags of a specified weight, say 33 lb or 42 lb. This is helpful for dosing fibers during concrete or UPHC production.
